Chapter Scholarships

One of the primary missions of the Oklahoma City (OKC) Chapter of AFCEA is to promote education in technical fields of study through the use of scholarships and grants. These fields include: hard sciences, mathematics, information management, communications, engineering and intelligence.

Our purpose is to help alleviate the shortage of people with technical degrees in this country. Every year the Oklahoma Chapter allocates a significant portion of our budget to fund educational programs:

The OKC AFCEA Chapter offers the following Awards, Scholarships and Grants.

1.Excellence in Science and Mathematics Teaching Award

A $500 award will be given for each of the following three categories: High school category, Middle school/junior high and Elementary school. This award is given to the teacher in the local area who is considered most deserving and who can put the award to best use. The award must be spent on materials that will help further students' education and interest in mathematics and science. It is up to the winning teacher's discretion to determine exactly what materials can help to reach this goal.

     a.Criteria:

     Show Evidence of Talent in Teaching, specifically what they consider good teaching, how they go about it, and how they plan to use the award if selected.

  • Show ability to respond to a Problem Solving Situation, by answering one of several questions posed in the nomination packet.
  • Show a wide base of Background and Experience.
  • Provide Letter of Support from colleagues; parents or students that provides factual evidence of their teaching ability.

     b.Timeline:

  • Oct - memos to local schools
  • Dec - nominations due/returned to VP Special Projects
  • Jan - select and notify winners
  • Feb - presented at Feb general mtg - luncheon

2.OKC AFCEA ROTC Scholarship

Six $500 scholarships are given to ROTC students at University of Oklahoma (3 - AF, Army, Navy), Oklahoma State University (2 - AF, Army) and University of Central Oklahoma (1 - Army). Students are selected by their ROTC Detachment Commander.

     a.Criteria:

  • ROTC students are selected by their Detachment Commander
  • Must be a math or science (technology) major
  • Must maintain a 2.5 GPA or higher
  • Active participation in ROTC program activities

     b.Scholarship Timeline:

  • Feb - memos to universities
  • Mar - Det CC selects scholarship recipients - notifies Chapter POC
  • Apr - Winners invited to the Apr Luncheon - presentations can also be made at the universities' ROTC award ceremonies held at OU and OSU

3.OKC AFCEA High School Scholarship Three students are selected for the chapter High School Education Grant. Applications are accepted from high school seniors who are about to pursue a degree higher than a high school diploma. The winners will receive $500 each. This scholarship is awarded to a child, grandchild or legal dependent of an active and financial OKC AFCEA member. The scholarship is intended to help offset the cost of tuition, books, and /or supplies associated with starting higher-level education.

     a.Criteria:

  • Two current letters of recommendation (cannot be from relatives)
  • Transcripts of grades from your current school
  • Maintain a 2.5 GPA or higher
  • Identify extracurricular/community activities involved both in and/or out of high school
  • If available, a copy of an acceptance letter from chosen school of higher-learning

     b.Scholarship Timeline:

  • Mar - memo sent to chapter PA rep to send to the chapter email group
  • Apr - applications returned to VP Special Projects. Board select and notify winners
  • May - awards presented at May luncheon

4.OKC AFCEA Enlisted Education Grant Each quarter of the calendar year, four $250 education grants are given to Tinker enlisted personnel who are pursuing an associates or bachelor's degree in a scientific field of study. The grants will help offset the cost of books and fees not covered by the military tuition assistance program. Selection is made by a panel of three OKC AFCEA Executive Board members.

     a.Criteria:

  • Must be Tinker Enlisted Personnel with no UIF
  • Must be actively pursuing associates or bachelor's degree (verified through Education Office or school)
  • Must maintain a 2.5 GPA or higher
  • Member fills out an application and submits a transcript or proof of current attendance in school.
  • Member may submit via email or regular mail.

  • Jan - email notification/application to "Tinker AF/CCF (First Sergeants)"
  • Feb - applications returned to VP Special Projects
  • Mar - presented at March general mtg - luncheon

       Spring:

  • Apr - email notification/application to "Tinker AF/CCF (First Sergeants)"
  • May - applications returned to VP Special Projects
  • Jun - presented at June general mtg - luncheon Summer:

        Summer:

  • Jul - email notification/application to "Tinker AF/CCF (First Sergeants)"
  • Aug - applications returned to VP Special Projects
  • Sep - presented at Sep general mtg - luncheon Fall:

        Fall:

  • Oct - email application to "Tinker AF/CCF (First Sergeants)"
  • Nov - applications returned to VP Special Projects
  • Dec - presented at Dec general mtg - luncheon

     c.Application Evaluation (Max points 40 points) -- Cumulative GPA - Max 5 points

  • Academic Achievements - Max 10 points
  • Other Notable Achievements - Max 10 points
  • Career Goals - Max 5 points
  • Overall articulations - Max 10 points

5.OKC AFCEA Scholarship for Working Professionals Each year, four $250 scholarships will be provided to Federal Government Civilian and Contractor personnel pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree while employed in the science or technology disciplines directly related to the mission of AFCEA.

The scholarship is intended for personnel attending school on a part-time basis, whether at a two year community college or accredited university institution. Part-time status will be defined as enrollment in at least one class (semester-equivalent) with a declared major in a science or technology degree program.

Undergraduate candidates must be at least second-year students attending an accredited college or university in the United States. Graduate students must have completed at least two postgraduate-level classes prior to the deadline date.

Students enrolled in online or distance-learning programs will be eligible, as long as all other criteria are met. Eligible students must also be currently employed (see above).

     a.Criteria:

  • Candidate must be a U.S. citizen, attending an accredited college or university in the United States as either a traditional or distance-learning student, and majoring in electrical, chemical, systems or aerospace engineering; mathematics; physics; technical management; computer information systems; computer science or related fields.
  • Candidate must be a Federal Government Civilian or Contractor
  • Undergraduate applications will be accepted from sophomore, junior and senior students - minimum second-year students please. -- An overall GPA of 3.0 is required.
  • Graduate applications will be accepted from students who have completed at least two postgraduate-level courses and are enrolled in an eligible degree-granting master's degree program
  • One letter of recommendation is required from current employer or relevant agency, printed on official letterhead and signed by appropriate supervisor.
  • An official transcript reflecting all college-level study will also be required. These items can be sent separately but must arrive by the deadline date.

     b.Scholarship Timeline:

  • Aug - email notification memo to Org Workflow accounts
  • Sep - provide notification at Monthly General Meeting
  • Sep - end of month, applications returned to VP Special Projects
  • Oct - select and notify winners, make presentation at Oct general mtg - luncheon
